20/9/12 22:15 (UTC)It turns out we’re friends a lot longer than we’re enemies.
That’s the sort of thing that happens at the end of the world. Even to Harry Dresden, the late member of the white council and the criminal, Johnny Marcone. This kind of wasteland makes for strange allies, but with the Nevernever bleeding out into Chicago, I can’t afford to be picky.
And despite being a gentleman of tastes, Marcone is surprisingly adept at survival.
Probably because he’s as formidable with knives as I am with magic.
I found him three months after it started, surrounded by a field the dead, his suit in tatters. I mistook him for a demon at first.
He didn’t mistake me for a second, kept his cool and said, “Harry Dresden, do I owe you a thanks for this fine apocalypse?”
He did, but I won’t admit it. Turns out it takes a lot of juice to break the bond of a Winter Knight. Turns out a lot of other things break loose at the same time. Turns out old Harry Dresden, the same one who died doing the right thing got the world sucked into Hell when he came back.
“Marcone, figures someone like you would make it in this world.”
“I was always rather more partial to the old one. Should I have any hope in you having some sort of plan to fix this?”
I have a plan, but it’s not a good one. Word says that Death himself is honor bound to accept all challengers. Beat death in a game of chance and you get a to take a life back. Maybe my own life, maybe I could stop this whole mess before it started.
Marcone for his part listens, and then politely inquires if I know of any safehouses where he might be able to get a cup of tea. Because tea, even in a post-apocalyptic Chicago is more easy to acquire than luck. Especially luck for someone like me that had to have broken an entire funhouse worth of mirrors in a past life.
But if Marcone’s going to stick by me, maybe my luck is starting to change.
