Dresden Files (Somehow your prompt said post apocalypse to me. IDEK)

It turns out we’re friends a lot longer than we’re enemies.

That’s the sort of thing that happens at the end of the world. Even to Harry Dresden, the late member of the white council and the criminal, Johnny Marcone. This kind of wasteland makes for strange allies, but with the Nevernever bleeding out into Chicago, I can’t afford to be picky.

And despite being a gentleman of tastes, Marcone is surprisingly adept at survival.

Probably because he’s as formidable with knives as I am with magic.

I found him three months after it started, surrounded by a field the dead, his suit in tatters. I mistook him for a demon at first.

He didn’t mistake me for a second, kept his cool and said, “Harry Dresden, do I owe you a thanks for this fine apocalypse?”

He did, but I won’t admit it. Turns out it takes a lot of juice to break the bond of a Winter Knight. Turns out a lot of other things break loose at the same time. Turns out old Harry Dresden, the same one who died doing the right thing got the world sucked into Hell when he came back.

“Marcone, figures someone like you would make it in this world.”

“I was always rather more partial to the old one. Should I have any hope in you having some sort of plan to fix this?”

I have a plan, but it’s not a good one. Word says that Death himself is honor bound to accept all challengers. Beat death in a game of chance and you get a to take a life back. Maybe my own life, maybe I could stop this whole mess before it started.

Marcone for his part listens, and then politely inquires if I know of any safehouses where he might be able to get a cup of tea. Because tea, even in a post-apocalyptic Chicago is more easy to acquire than luck. Especially luck for someone like me that had to have broken an entire funhouse worth of mirrors in a past life.

But if Marcone’s going to stick by me, maybe my luck is starting to change.

Oooh, very nice! An entire epic in a nutshell - lovely. :-) And I love what you did with the prompts, too! Excellent work, thank you... now I will have to write the rest of the story in my head, because this is an addictive appetizer. ;-)

VICTORY INDEED. (I did my mountain of homework today and AM NOT GOING TO WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING THIS WEEKEND! YAY!)

(Also, since when are you a SPN fan? Whatever, have some Castiel and Sam and note that all the time travel in SPN seems to go between present and 1973 as well)

The angel wore a trench coat.

Somehow that was more ridiculous than everything else he’d been through. Than the time travel and the Test Card Girl and… Gene.

“You have been misplaced,” the angel intoned, his voice reverberating around the room. “I am here to remedy the situation.”

“You’re telling me angels sent me to 1973.”

“An angel. Technically an archangel mascaraing as a Trickster, but that point is moot as he is no longer numbered with the living. It falls to me to remedy his mistakes.”

Sam blinked. “And why pick 1973?”

“Because he thought it was funny.” The angel’s face scrunched up. “But I often miss the nuances of human humor, much less my brother’s. Part of it might be that 1973 is a year of particular mystical convergences. It’s much easier to travel here than move back to 1963.”

“Obviously.”

“I am told it is a somewhat uncomfortable trip, but I am here to offer you a ride home.”

“Back to 2006?”

“If you would, yes.”

“And if not?”

“Then I guess you may stay. I’m unsure even now if I can make this journey with a companion. This might be your only chance.”

But whether he realized it at the time or not, Sam Tyler had made his choice a long time ago.

...I feel like I don't really get Marcone. I've been kind of on the outskirts of DF fandom stuff (ie I read the Yuletide fic) and I see a lot of Dresden/Marcone and... am I missing something? Because I don't get that at all from canon. I'm in book 5 of my reread and maybe it happens in parts I've forgotten, but bwah?
