Title- First Impressions
Rating- PG
Summary- For the contest on
jam_pony_fic. The first time Normal had met Max, he’d known she would be trouble.
Characters- Normal with cameos by Max, Logan, Alec
Words- 450
Disclaimer- I do not own Dark Angel
Author’s note- I wrote a Normal fic without one mention of Bip Bip Bip. I am deeply shamed. On the bright side, this is the second fic I finished today. That’s got to count for something. =)
The first time Normal had met Max, he’d known she would be trouble. She’d breezed in behind Theo looking like she owned the place and brazenly asked him for an application before Theo could even give her an introduction. His every instinct had told him not to give her an application but she’d quickly toned down her attitude put on a serious face and told him she’d work hard if he would just give her a chance.
He’d caved when she called him sir. It had slipped out of her mouth naturally and without sarcasm and it had taken him completely by surprise.
He hired her figuring, if nothing else, she could teach the other street urchins at Jam Pony some respect.
She’d never called him sir again, but she had been everything she’d promised, diligent, hard working and reliable. That lasted approximately eleven months.
*************
The first time he’d met Logan, he’d known something was going to go wrong. Max’s previously stellar work ethic had already begun to drift to the lazy loafing of the other hoodlums but at least she’d still shown up every day. Logan had come in, brandishing Max’s picture and demanding an address and that was the last time he could ever consider Max a reliable employee.
He wasn’t stupid. Logan had come looking for Max and the next time Normal had seen the guy, it was on TV being shot. It was all connected somehow. Logan and his wheelchair and Max and her mysterious ailments. She’d come in late before that of course, and she’d left work early once or twice, but before Logan had come into the picture, she’d never outright skipped work.
Now, he practically expected her not to show up.
He probably should have fired her on the first offense, but something about all the lies and subterfuge intrigued him. Besides, the excuses her coworkers concocted were his only real source of amusement.
*************
The first time he met Alec, he’d seen something familiar in his nonchalance. He’d walked into Jam Pony with a confidence and a cocky smile. In between the shock of meeting his hero of the ring and having him ask for a job, he placed the feeling.
He’d reminded him of Max.
“Normal,” Max cautioned, “you don't want to do this.”
His boxing hero. Monty Cora. Working for him. It was one of his recurring fantasies.
Still, there was that small prickle in the back of his neck, a small voice whispering that this boy was trouble. Yeah, yeah, he grumbled internally, so is everyone else, after a while.
He’d always been a glutton for punishment.
