Title: Born in Fire
Character: Dean, Sam, The Ceiling Demon, bits of John
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: I lay no claim to Supernatural or the Winchesters.
Genre: Gen, one shot
Summary: The demon has taken away everything and even as it lies there, trapped and beaten, it’s looking to take just a little bit more...
Author’s Note: This so gets jossed tonight, but for now, it's cannon.

He’s not your brother,” the demon says laying bound and beaten in a ring of rock salt and Dean can see Sam’s body hitch in midswing and the sword freezes. The demon has taken away everything and even as it lies there, trapped and beaten, it’s looking to take just a little bit more.

He’s not your brother,” the demon says again because it must know it’s only got that one card left to play and the truth can be more destructive than a thousand lies, provided of course, you could tell the difference.

And Dean’s lying in a pool of his own blood, groping for his sword even though each arm feels like its probably broken in a dozen places and he’s thinking, it’ll all knit back together’, because no matter how bad he got hurt, it always did. The only way to kill him is by beheading, and the demon’s not going to stay bound forever, and Sammy’s just standing there, not able to do a thing because the demon’s been watching him and the demon knows just where his weakness is.

Demon or not, no one’s killing Sammy if he’s still around to stop them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dean doesn’t remember anything from before the fire. Not a single thing. He has no memory of a woman’s voice, no memory of his mother, not a vague recolection of absolute saftey, just a battered old picture and a blank void where his brief childhood should be but isn’t.

He pieces together what passes for a memory by listening. It isn’t hard. For the first two years, John crept into the room he shared with Sammy and would talk to them forever, whispered stories about their motherin a voice that might crack if it went on for much longer. And Dean would lie still in bed, eyes closed shut, half afarid that his dad would stop if he knew he was awake. He blends his father stories with his own thoughts of how it must have been and when Sammy demands, “Tell me about mom,” Dean recites his patchwork stories and tries not to let it sound like a lie.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The clock stops and the hallway flickers and all of a sudden, in place of nothing stands a little boy, four years old and scared out of his mind.and to everyone but the boy himself, it’s just like he’s always been there.

And that’s when things begin to burn.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dean bleeds just as much as Sammy does, if not more because he’s never been afraid of getting hurt. He knows his dad worries about him. He can see it in the deepening lines of John Wincherster’s face everytime he has to clean another one of his wounds.

Dean tried to keep from squirming as his father dabbed the anteseptic into the gash on his cheek. “You’ve got to keep a better watch for yourself, Dean,” his father says, sounding about a hundred years old.

“It was going to find Sammy,” Dean hissed through clenched teeth and for a moment, his father mercifully withdrew the anteseptic.

“You’re no use to Sammy if your dead.”

Dean meets his eyes and nodds curtly. “Yessir.”

John dabs at the wound once more. “It’s gonna leave a hell of a scar.”

And the funny thing about it all was it didn’t.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He doesn’t even see his birth certificate until the day his father takes him to get his driver’s license and he’s a little surprise it exists at all. The paper’s too plain and the writing’s too sloppy but there’s that official seal that makes it perfectly legitimate. Dean Winchester, born to Mary and John Winchester in Lawrence, Kansas.

But when they get back to the impala, he remembers the box of fake identification under the passenger’s seat and remembers just how easily identities can be created.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first thing Dean remembers is standing in an unfamiliar hall as the acrid stench of smoke fills the hallway. He says “Daddy!” and doesn’t recognize the man who shoved the baby into his arms even though by all rights, he should have known who it was.

“Take your brother outside as fast as you can! Don’t look back! Now Dean, go!”

And with an introduction like that, it was hardly surprising that it was three years before he let Sammy out of his sight, because Dean always obeys orders. It's just what he was programmed to do.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He thinks he must have been born with this pendent around his neck because he knows he’s been wearing it at least since the fire. And to his knowledge, it’s never left his neck. He plans on keeping it there until he dies even and can't come up with a good reason as to why.

Sam asked about it once when Dean had been teasing him about a temporary tattoo of a flower one of the girls at school had pressed onto his neck. Asked him why he wore a damn necklace when he was so against being girly.

He was nine at the time and he’d let his hands fly to the clasp at his neck and then he’d hesitated, and brought his hand carefully back down to his side and grinned at his little brother. “Like you wouldn’t try and swipe it the second I took it off, Sammy.”

And he’d ruffled the indignant five year old’s hair and tried to forget the moment of terror as his hand had started undoing the clasp; like if he took off that pendent, Dean as was now would cease to exist.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He’s not your brother,” the demon says to Sammy and Dean can see him break even before it turns to Dean and says, “You’re not even human.”

And hearing it out loud nearly breaks Dean as well. Daddy’s little solider, mocks a nasty little voice in his head, Daddy’s little monster. He had never belonged in the human world, Sam’s world.

He can see the demon’s yellow, not quite human eyes working and its voice echoes in his head and suddenly, Dean knows its stalling. Knows it because he’d be doing the exact same thing if it were him trapped in the circle. Like father, like son, he thinks and fights the incredible urge to start laughing because they’d always thought it was Sam with a connection to the demon. Sam with the freaky powers. Sam that got Jess and Mary killed.

But it had always been Dean.

Sammy swayed like he’d been punched in the gut, or maybe something worse because Sam could always take punches like a pro and this has rendered him useless.

Dean pushes himself up, holding the sword loosely in his off hand because the other one feels like it might fall off despite the fact that they’ll be nothing to show for his pain in a week.

And Sammy’s not really family, Dean thinks, but then again, the first thing he remembers is his baby brother being thrust into his arms and he figures, that’s as close to family as he’ll ever get.

He’s not your brother,” The demon says again and it sounds gleeful because it knows this is their one weakness. Dean could see its triumph. It was going to get out soon. “He’s not human.

“Yeah,” grunts Dean, staggering towards the binding circle and raising the sword. “Like we care.”

The head slid off with ridiculous, almost anti-climactic ease, especially considering how they’d felt when they’d used the colts final bullet. The body exploded into flames and neither of them said a thing until the demon was just a smoldering pile of ash. When Sam finally broke the silence, his voice was cracking, unanswered questions burning in the single word: “Dean…”

He doesn’t let Sam finish. “We’re close enough.”

Oooooooh. Nice. Very very nice. I really liked how you picked up on the pendant. I haven't seen the first ten or so episodes, so I've been wondering about it. ^^ I like it when people mention it.

Thanks. =)

I've been waiting for an episode where they tell us what that damn pendent is because it's always there and it's driving me a little crazy.

Love it. And you know a fic is good when your friend who has only seen 4 episodes not only gets it all, but likes it too!

I'm gonna rec this on TWoP's Supernatural fanfic thread, if you don't mind.

I've read a few stories with Sammy being somehow related to the demon, and I figured, what the hell, it's fanfic, why can't Dean have some of that angst too. =)

Glad you liked it.

Ooooo,
I like that what if.

Great little plot elements bought together to make it eerily plausible. I like Dean's scarring - or lack of it, the healing and the pendant.

Nicely done.

The lack of injury continuity in this show is the one thing that really bothers me. I mean, they get mauled one episode and the next they're perfectally fine. It always seemed more noticable to me with Dean than Sam because he always seems to get hurt (just how many walls can they throw him through?)

Glad you liked it.

The being thrown into walls thing doesn't bother me so much - I have seen someone else commenting on that, but I did Judo for awhile, and once you know how to fall/land, it's surprising how much damage you can take when it's spread out as opposed to localised impact (I mean, landing full body as opposed to on an arm or something stupid).

But, every other sort of injury they've taken? Yeah.
They better have some stupid magical ointment that explains why they're not getting the scars they deserve. :P
Sometimes I feel like taking the near-naked pics of them and photoshopping scars in. Except. That's kinda obsessive.
;)

I prefer fic restitution. :D

Oh, wow. I love this. It's completely plausible, and very well written. And the reference to the pendant was particularly well done.
