Whether either of them was already sexually active is unknown, as is whether they disclosed their experience. It's entirely possible that they both were "waiting for marriage", and that John assumed he'd be less nervous and more into the whole sex thing once he was married. These things happen, and most often not out of a willful intent to deceive.
