Genre: Gen, ficlet
Summary: This is the first time Dean has ever died. Sort of an episode tag to Skin

His life is at a point where he has pretty much been accused of everything. It was just part of the business.

He is the lead suspect in thirty-three murder cases.

He has committed over four hundred acts of arson.

He has seventeen fake IDs. All bearing a different name

He has failed to save fifty one victims.

He’d been to forty-eight of the fifty states and the only thing stopping him from getting to the last two is the plane trip.

There is a warrant for his arrest in forty two of those states.

He has been run out of fifty two towns.

He has never paid his taxes.

He has been arrested thirty nine times since he was fifteen.

But, as he realizes, staring down at the corpse of his doppelganger, this is the first time he’s ever actually been dead.

Sam doesn’t let him attend his own funeral. Says he has a Tom Sawyer complex. Knows that there would be no one to speak for the so-called murderer. Sam doesn’t like how he doesn’t care.

They pick up his certificate of death out of curiosity more than anything and spend that night at a bar. Sam starts to laugh at the absurdity of it all. He just stares at the paper and when he’s feeling sober again, he burns it.

Closure, he says. But neither of them believe it. The death certificate made the danger a little too real.

They know they’re not superheroes.

He has had twelve broken bones.

Eight gunshot wounds.

Nine concussions.

He knows where almost all of the hospitals in the country are.

He’s been treated at a grand total of four.

He’s been beaten, tortured and nearly burned at the stake.

He has been in mortal danger for the majority of his life.

This is the first time he’s ever died.

Sam boots up his computer to and starts to hack into the police database. Its standard procedure for them, check to see how many of their aliases are still valid. Sam looks up. “Must be the first time in years cops aren’t looking Dean Winchester.”

He turns the situation over in his mind, examining its advantages and his face split into a grin. “Being dead just may be the best damn cover story we’ve ever had.”

It’s funny really. How many times he’s escaped the hand of death. Just how much of his being alive was skill? How much was luck? When would it run out?

He’s been arrested thirty-nine times.

Had twelve broken bones.

Been shot eight times.

And this is the first time he’s ever died.

He’s not looking to do it again.

Yay! I really like this. It's got the right balance of Deanness and funny and perfection. I loved it.

Really nicely done. It's blunt and direct like Dean, and has the same depth and sadness underneath. The language mirrors the emotions, the character.

Yep. I'm always a little worried about getting characters right in a new fandom, but I'm glad you think I've got it.

I think the Tom Sawyer complex really hit it on the head for Dean. It seems oddly right to sum Dean's character into a jaded Tom Sawyer.

Glad to see some damn good gen outta you. Very good :)

I'm half surprised we didn't get a look at Dean looking for his own funeral, because it just seem like the thing he'd do.

Now I want to fic it, but I got something I really need to focus on =/.

...looking at your earlier comment about writing gen... This was my 1st supernatural story and before this, I've pretty much always written gen...

Yeah, I say that to my gen writers. Always good for some supernatural gen. Does that make sense? I don't sometimes.

I really need to watch more of this show.

I loved the fic, especially with all the numbers.

You really do need to watch more. It seems to just be getting better as it goes. I'm just hoping my death curse with TV shows (my three favs all axed in the season I got hooked) doesn't extend to this fandom.

Speaking of watching supernatural, I think Erin's going to come over this Friday to watch it. care to join?
